Time for safe community streets

Posted

To the editor:

As one of many people who work from a home office, I have the chance to frequently drive past the Kinneret Day School at The Century Apartments around school let-out time, between 2:45 and 3 p.m., most school days. And almost every single time I drive to my house on Edgehill Avenue, I must make my way through a gauntlet of illegally parked and standing cars, inconsiderately blocking a very narrow stretch of Netherland Avenue in front of, and just north of, Kinneret’s entrance.

God help the community if and when an emergency vehicle attempts to pass this spot at this time.

Possible solutions to these dangerously parked and stopped cars picking up kids might include:

• Having the school set aside an area in cooperation with The Century that allows for a safer spot to pick up the children involved (preferred).

• Banning the illegally placed vehicles and towing them away if they don’t follow requests to move them immediately for any reason, other than an immediate life-threatening medical emergency.

• Blindly ticketing the cars (not drivers) a la “running a red light” camera citation, in effect forcing the inconsiderate drivers to pay for the privilege of blocking the street.

Suggestions for a mutually considerate solution to this safety issue are most welcome. Do you hear that, Community Board 8?

If the parents blocking the entire narrow street at this choke point don’t care enough for the safety of their kids, other members of the community, their neighbors or first responders, perhaps it’s time the 50th Precinct take notice to help teach them what it means to compromise in the interest of the safety of the entire community, including themselves and their kids.

After all, we all live in this community, and we should be respectful and considerate enough of our neighbors to make getting along far easier, and safer for all of us.
