UPDATE: The New York Police Department has identified the victim in Tuesday's shooting as Pedro Almonte-Sanchez, 39, who lived at 85 Strong St., where the incident took place.

In a statement released Wednesday morning, Councilman Fernando Cabrera said Almonte-Sanchez's son was also there when he was shot.

"This senseless tragedy awakens us once more to our collective responsibility to stop gun violence and the devastation it wreaks on children, families, communities and the entire city," Cabrera said. "My heart goes out to the Almonte-Sanchez family. I extend condolences and pray for their comfort and healing."

Police are scrambling to figure out what happened Tuesday evening in a shooting that killed a 39-year-old man and injured another in Kingsbridge.

The victim, who police did not identify late Tuesday was walking in front of 85 Strong St., just a few blocks south of the Jerome Park Reservoir, with another man, 25.

Details are sketchy, but an unknown person approached the two, shooting the older man in the head and trying to do the same with the younger one. That second bullet, however, only grazed the 25-year-old’s head.

By the time police arrived, the 39-year-old had succumbed to his injuries. The younger man was taken to Montefiore Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries.

Detectives are combing through surveillance footage of the area to get some leads, but it seems there were no witnesses to the shooting. While nothing is concrete yet, one officer told The Riverdale Press that it’s possible the victim may have known his attacker.
