Unlocking minds of our youth

“Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it may be a diamond in the rough.”

These are the words of Mary McLeod Bethune, who lived from 1875 to 1955, who not only was an educator/founder of Bethune-Cookman College, but an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Today, teachers and the New York Liberty team, in conjunction with Madison Square Garden, are investing in children. The teachers of P.S. 75 in the Bronx are leaders, as parents and staff members have chaperoned children on weekends and evenings to Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium. The entire Hunts Point “village” is represented as it watches the nationally acclaimed players.

This is basketball and baseball at its best.

Surely teachers are investing in the children daily. Teachers are the academic coaches and leaders of programs that benefit children all year round.

Yes, teachers are on the move throughout the school year, vacations and holidays with their students in tow. And for teachers in New York City, teaching is all about investing time, energy and personal non-reimbursable monies to advance children.

It is also about moving children academically from Point A to Point B. This is the same road to success our teachers have taken to become academically sound leaders and educators.

Furthermore, teachers are willing to pull out all stops to make great things happen for their students. And these great things are happening every day.

Teachers are writing proposals to acquire needed classroom resources through Donors Choose.

And teachers are coaching students after school and in the library because they care about children.

Teachers are making an investment to secure the future of America … a future that is not their own.

Therefore, like Mary McLeod Bethune, our teachers can challenge our legislators in Albany and Washington, as well as our officials in city government, to invest in a child, because each child is a diamond in the rough with the potential for greatness.
