POLICE BEAT

What’s up with WhatsApp extortion?

Posted

Crooks tried to bamboozle a 42-year-old woman out of $3,000 last week — using social media of all things.

The woman told cops she received a text on the smartphone messaging application WhatsApp, claiming the sender had nude photos of her and would send them out on Facebook if she didn’t wire them the cash. They even claimed to have video of the woman naked, threatening to show her young son.

But she showed her muster, defying the crooks — who, of course, had no such elicit content — and reported the whole thing to police.

Cops are still searching for the wannabe scammers.

Victim due for new phone

It’s hard to predict the exact reasons someone is likely to commit a robbery, but one has to assume it’s to get some potentially really valuable goods.

Well one robber likely failed with his last score: an iPhone 5S. The phone, which came out in 2013, is practically considered ancient in today’s quickly evolving technological age.

A 24-year-old man was walking along Sedgwick Avenue and West 229th Street last week when someone snuck up behind him claiming to have a gun. The robber demanded everything in his pockets, which included the victim’s wallet, keys and, according to police, his older iPhone.

The perp is described as around 18 years old, 5-foot-7, and weighing 180 pounds..

Police continue to investigate the robbery, but in the meantime, the victim will have to look for a new phone — hopefully one a little more recent.

Car flipped in drunken driving case

Cops were really flipping mad at a man they claim drove drunk last Thursday after a crash on Review Place and Van Cortlandt Park West.

The 27-year-old was driving 15 mph when his steering wheel locked up, police said, causing the car to flip onto its left side.

One officer arriving at the scene said he saw the driver swaying back and forth with bloodshot eyes. He cuffed the driver, taking him to the 46th Precinct for an official Breathalyzer test.

The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated.
