GREEN-WOOD PRESENTS A SOUND INSTALLATION (“VIGIL”) OF THE HARMONIC TONES OF DEATHBED SINGING

SOLACE TO THOSE WHO ARE ON THE THRESHOLD OF DEATH

Bedside singing choirs – a chorus of female voices singing softly at the bedside of someone who is ill or dying – now exist throughout the United States, offering solace to those who are on the threshold of death. Visitors to Green-Wood will discover this ancient art in a new site-specific sound installation for Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel.

With “Vigil,” artist Leigh Davis brings a recorded version of this beautiful music into a sacred space. Davis’s installation emphasizes the beauty and peace one might find in the universal experience of death while also exploring the power of loss and memorialization. Visitors may sit in one of the pews to take in the beautiful sounds or move throughout the chapel to experience the voices from different standpoints.

The audio speakers are artfully placed throughout the Chapel so that visitors to hear a continuous recording of three choral works. Vigil is presented as part of Reimagining Tradition, an exhibition developed by Open Source Gallery.
