To the editor: The celebration of Juneteenth was a pivotal marker of freedom for the enslaved Blacks in 1865 and beyond. However, the idea that the slaves were freed two years before, via the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 — the executive order of its day — and the news of freedom took that long to then be announced by Maj. Milo Riverso is returning to Manhattan College to be the institution’s 21st president. Being part of the Manhattan Jaspers’ family runs strong in Riverso’s family, whose siblings studied at the Catholic liberal arts institution, as did his father. Soon, his son will be a soon Jasper as well. more
