It wasn’t Christmas unless it was Christmas with the Connaughtons. Throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, Connaughton’s Riverdale Steak House just off West 259th Street was the place to be on Christmas Eve. The restaurant’s owners, Terry and Anne Connaughton, would spend a month preparing for their biggest night, when the steakhouse was packed to the brim.

It’s not like it was free of issues before, but few expected the Key Food supermarket at 5661 Riverdale Ave., to be shuttered on a seemingly random morning. Yet, that’s exactly what happened to the long-embattled North Riverdale grocery store Monday morning when would-be customers were greeted with large banners declaring the store had indeed closed.

More often than I would like, I find myself leaving our North Riverdale office quite late in the evening. If you’ve never been around Skyview Shopping Center near West 259th Street after midnight, it’s an interesting experience. What’s typically a busy Riverdale Avenue becomes eerily quiet.

Riverdale wants a Trader Joe’s, but does Trader Joe’s want Riverdale? No. At least, not yet. An email has circulated throughout North Riverdale in recent weeks calling on locals to fill out a form on the supermarket chain’s website requesting the grocery chain open a new store in the area. Specifically, the email called for people to request Trader Joe’s replace the Key Foods at 5661 Riverdale Ave.
