Passion for fashion

Students from Horace Mann put their fashion sense, modeling skills and artistic talent to good use on Feb. 3, with a fashion show to benefit Generation Rwanda, an organization that helps Rwandan students receive an education by providing scholarships, housing, health care and training. Half the proceeds also went to the school’s FAD Magazine, a student-created fashion, art and design publication.

The event, held in the school cafeteria, looked like it could have taken place at New York’s Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek. Each chair was accented with a small black gift bag containing coupons and a lip balm; student DJs pumped out seductive beats; and fashionably dressed attendees milled around, eating food from Broadway Joe’s, Magnolia Bakery and Fresh Direct. There was even a “step and repeat” wall, where those entering the room could strike a pose in front of a wall bearing the magazine’s logo and get their photos taken by student photographers.

“This is an event that helps bring together the entire school community,” Rachel Scheinfeld, co-editor in chief of FAD Magazine, said.

Rachel isn’t kidding. More than 100 students were involved in all aspects of the show, including clothing design, food service, photography, modeling and DJing.
When the show began, students paraded 26 looks down a spotlit runway, turning dramatically at the end. Some flashed smiles while others looked straight ahead, dead serious in their high heels and short dresses.

All the looks were geometry themed, meaning students were asked to focus on sharp, minimalist and structured design. There was a purple dress with diamond cut outs, T-shirts with colorful, complex geometric shapes, angular skirts and dresses with large, vivid blocks of color. The outfits had names like “squared,” “acute,” “hexagonal,” “parabola” and “infinity.”

“It’s nice to be able to design my own clothes and really see the product of my own artwork,” said senior designer Natalie Imamura, who designed a circle skirt with a triangular overlay.
