Bowman, Warren call for America to support care

U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman has joined forces with Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren on a new resolution they say will dramatically expand and strengthen the care economy while improving conditions and compensation for care workers.

Called the Care for All Agenda, the resolution demands “far-reaching” public investments to not only guarantee the care people need in all stages of life, but also to secure care workers by raising pay, benefits, protections and standards. It also looks to provide opportunities for such care workers to unionize.

“As we emerge from the pandemic, rescue our economy and move forward with a national reckoning over systemic racism, we have an historic opportunity to build an America that works for all people, by centering the care that all people need,” Bowman said, in a release.

“Care workers — disproportionately Black and brown women — are undervalued and exploited in America today, and people and families struggle to access care. Without a holistic care infrastructure to support us, our economy and society simply cannot thrive.”

Other New York lawmakers signed up to support the resolution are U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and U.S. Rep. Grace Meng from Queens.

Endorsements pour in as elections near

Jessica Haller has earned the backing of Elizabeth Crowley, a former Queens councilwoman who is now a co-founder of 21 in ‘21 —an organization dedicated to electing women to the city council this year.

Haller is running in the March 23 special election to replace Councilman Andrew Cohen. One of her challengers, Dan Padernacht, picked up an endorsement of his own this past week, getting a nod from Bill Samuels.

Samuels is the founder of several advocacy groups including the Council on Economic Priorities, and New Yorkers for a More Effective Constitution.

Eric Dinowitz has earned the support of the Bronx Democrats, the borough’s political machine.

The Bronx Dems say they want to stay “neutral” in the borough president race, but has decided to back Brian Benjamin in his quest to become the city’s next comptroller. The primary for that race is June 22.
