Bronx special waste site reopens

The city sanitation department’s special waste drop-off site in the Bronx has now officially reopened.

Closed since the initial coronavirus pandemic shutdown last year, the Hunts Point location at Farragut Street and the East River is designed to give people a place to bring potentially harmful household items for proper disposal.

It’s open every Saturday as well as the last Friday of each month from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for legal holidays and severe weather.

The site is for non-commercial materials only, and those disposing of such items will be asked to prove they reside in the city.

Among the items people can bring to the sites are batteries — including car batteries, motor oil and transmission fluid, motor oil filters, fluorescent light bulbs, latex paint, devices containing mercury, passenger car tires, and electronics.

Also open once again is state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi’s district office at 3190 Riverdale Ave., is staffed, and expects to start taking appointments for in-person visits later this summer.
