CARTER BURDEN GALLERY ANNOUNCES THREE NEW EXHIBITIONS BY RE-EMERGING OLDER ARTISTS

Three new exhibitions featuring the unique artwork of re-emerging older artists will be on display April 25 – May 22, 2019 at the Carter Burden Gallery, located at 548 West 28th Street #534 in Manhattan. The Carter Burden Gallery showcases the vibrant, cutting-edge and transformative art that is the product of the unique cultural wealth possessed by older professional artists. The Carter Burden Gallery is an initiative of the Carter Burden Network, a leader in aging services in NYC that promotes the well-being of New Yorkers 60 and older through a continuum of services, advocacy, arts and culture and volunteer programs.

The East Gallery will feature the exhibition “Uncontrollable” by 11 gallery artists who will present sculptures and paintings using intense colors and extraordinary techniques.

Artist Simon Rigg, whose career has been strongly influenced by indigenous architecture, presents exceptional ceramic works that are constructed with an array of porcelain rods that are entangled and bound together with string. Jennifer Woolcock Schwartz’s meticulously crafted oil painting on linen, Pink Clash, is from her series “Cross Current,” which loosely conveys her impression of New York City’s vibrancy and diversity and creates an illusion of movement with color and lines. Hanna Seiman’s painting, “Blunder,” pays homage to expressionism and color field painting. Her use of pigment flows and blends across the canvas creates light and depth to the painting.

Other artists featured in the East Gallery include Stephen Cimini, Fukuko Harris, Helen Iranyi, Suejin Jo, Susan Lisbin, Margo Mead, Kiyoshi Otsuka, and Mitchell Rosenzweig.

In the West Gallery, the exhibition “To The Muse” is Myrna Burks second show at Carter Burden Gallery. Burks presents monoprints that are inspired by the Japanese Yatsuro papers on which they are printed. Each vertical print was created by rolling a collage of shapes on a plexiglass plate and using an etching press.

Burks is a painter and printmaker based in the East Village of Manhattan and Orient,

Long Island. Her work has been shown in exhibitions nationally and internationally, including The New York Public Library Print Collection, The Painting Center in New York, Davidson Gallery in Seattle, the 2003 International Print Center Invitational in New York and the Exhibition of International Printmakers in Antwerp, Belgium.

For the On the Wall exhibit, Sue Dean presents the installation Promise, which honors the over 120 million street children and disadvantaged tribal children around the world. The installation is composed of discarded materials that Dean collected in her travels and have been drawn or painted on and stitched or glued together.

Dean’s background includes extensive international travel as well as participation in juried group exhibitions, the Creative Capital Summer Intensive, and Poetry Slams in New York. In 2017 her work was selected by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and Artists Unite to be featured in the New York City’s subway system.
