CB8 looking to award volunteer leaders

Community Board 8 is seeking nominations for its annual Irving Ladimer Community Service Award.

Named for a longtime community advocate who died in 2018 at 102, the award is designed to acknowledge the many volunteer efforts of groups and individuals within the community, according to a release.

The only criteria for the award is that the nominee has acted on a volunteer basis to improve or enhance the quality of life of those living or working within the CB8 area.

Entries must include the name of the person or group nominated, contact information, a description of the volunteer work, and the person who is doing the nominating.

Nominations can be sent to CB8’s office at 5676 Riverdale Ave., Suite 100, Bronx, N.Y., 10471, to the attention of Pablo Romano. It should note it’s for the Irving Ladimer Community Service Award.

Deadline for nominations is April 12.

Teens encouraged to rap way to census

Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz Jr., is trying to get the word out about the census by encouraging teenagers in the borough to compete in his Bronx Counts Challenge.

Between Feb. 24 and March 2, Diaz will collect social media submissions from middle or high school students in the Bronx using the “BronxCounts” hashtag. Entries can include original songs, raps, spoken word, dance performances or artwork designed to educate and encourage their neighbors to participate in the census.

The top three submissions on Twitter and Instagram with the most likes will be considered the winner.

“Without full participation in the 2020 census, our city and state will not see the political and budgetary representation we deserve,” Diaz said, in a release.

All submissions need to include original artwork and mention the Bronx.

First place will become part of Diaz’s official promotion of the census in the borough.
