To the editor:
On June 10, a glorious late spring day, I took a leisurely bike ride on the old railroad bed behind the stable in Van Cortlandt Park.
It leads eventually to the parade field. There were many very busy and adorable chipmunks in the woods, and crossing the path, almost oblivious to me.
On the way back, I was walking the bike as there were more walkers on the path, including two young Black girls followed by their dad.
I said to the ladies as we got closer to one another: “Did you see the chipmunks?” And they enthusiastically said “yes.”
I said something like, “Aren’t they cute?” and they agreed.
As the dad and I got closer to one another, he said to me, “Thank you for speaking to us.”
I was very moved by this, especially in light of current issues in our country, and said, “Enjoy the rest of this lovely day with the ladies.”
