Engel, Bowman earn new endorsements

She may not have been successful in her own primary to become the Democratic nominee for President of the United States, but U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is giving a boost to her lower-chamber colleague Eliot Engel in his own battle to keep his longtime seat in the U.S. House.

Gillibrand endorsed Engel, highlighting his efforts to protect women’s rights and stand up to the Trump administration.

“Eliot has always been one of the most effective advocates in Congress for his constituents and all New Yorkers,” Gillibrand said, in a release. “As a senior member of House leadership, Congressman Engel is often the tip of the spear in demanding federal resources for our state — especially in areas so hard hit by this terrible virus.

One of Engel’s most prominent challengers in the June 23 primary picked up an endorcement of his own over the last few weeks.

NYC Kids PAC, a parent-led political action committee who advocate for public schools, has endorsed Jamaal Bowman to replace Engel.

“Jamaal is not only a progressive educator who understands critical education issues like the back of his hand, but he will fight every day to ensure that (New York City) students and schools get the resources — and policies — that they need,” said Naila Rosario, the PAC’s president, in a release.

“From being a classroom teacher to becoming the founding principal of a public middle school in the Bronx, Jamaal has dedicated his life to improving public education and the lives of his students and families.”

The PAC endorsement for Bowman came just a day after he won the support of RootsAction and Indivisible Nation Brooklyn — both which committed volunteers and a broader digital presence to his campaign.

RootsAction describes itself as a group focused on economic fairness, equal rights for all, civil liberties, environmental protection, and ending wars.

Indivisible Nation says it resists authoritarianism, corruption and intolerance by fighting for justice, sustainability and equality.

Other candidates in the primary include Andom Ghebreghiorgis, Chris Fink and Sammy Ravelo.
