Engel endorsed by anti-gun group

U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel picked up an endorsement last month from Brady: United Against Gun Violence, in his bid to keep his seat in Washington.

“Eliot Engel has championed gun violence prevention throughout his time in Congress, working to make New York and all of our communities safer,” said Kris Brown, president of the gun violence prevention organization, in a release.

“Rep. Engel has shown that he understands the need to prevent gun violence in all of its forms. He is an essential partner in this work who is not afraid to act.”

Engel authored the Safe Gun Storage Act that provided more regulations for how firearms are stored, and was a co-sponsor of a bipartisan background checks bill, dedicating his vote to two people in Westchester County who were killed by gun violence.

Although the organization dates back to the 1970s, Brady is named for former White House press secretary Jim Brady who was seriously injured during the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981. After that, Brady became a staunch advocate for background checks that were included in what was late dubbed the “Brady Bill,” signed in 1993 by President Bill Clinton.

Immigrant group backs Espaillat, Bowman

The New York Immigration Coalition handed out its first round of endorsements last month, putting its support behind U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat, as well as school administrator Jamaal Bowman, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel for his House seat.

The advocacy group says it supports candidates and elected officials who stand up for immigrant communities against anti-immigrant opponents.

Those seeking the group’s endorsement completed surveys focusing on five distinct policy areas: Expanding democracy, racial justice, health and welfare, education, and immigrant justice.

“Now more than ever we must ensure that our elected leaders are fighting for all of us, committed to fairness, justice and opportunity for all regardless of immigration status,” said coalition executive director Steve Choi, in a release.
