Espaillat, Bowman not happy with Senate verdict

The U.S. Senate voted to acquit former president Donald Trump for a second time last week, not willing to make him at least politically responsible for inciting a mob that attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6.

The trial came after what was considered a “speedy” impeachment in the U.S. House, completed just before Trump left office Jan. 20. It was a measure supported not only by all the House Democrats, but even  a handful of Republicans. It also had the support of the Bronx congressional delegation, including Jamaal Bowman and Adriano Espaillat.

Neither were satisfied with the Senate trial results, even though seven Republicans joined the Democrats in an effort to convict Trump.

“By voting to acquit Donald Trump, 43 Republicans excused fascist violence,” Bowman told The Riverdale Press in a statement. “By doing so, they said clearly that the use of violence against political opposition is excusable, so long as the perpetrator’s success would have meant Republican rule.

“We can’t — and won’t — forget this.”

Espaillat shared similar sentiments soon after the vote on his Facebook page.

“Senate Republicans’ refusal to stand up against a violent insurrection by a president trying to cling to power will go down as one of the darkest moments in history,” Espaillat said.

Bowman set to chair energy subcommittee

U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman has his work cut out for him inside Capitol Hill. Just days after becoming vice chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, Bowman was elected chair of the House Subcommittee on Energy.

The subcommittee is part of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Bowman said he’ll focus the subcommittee on achieving complete renewable energy resources across the country to help combat the global climate crisis.

“We can heal our planet, use cleaner and more efficient sources of energy while creating green jobs,” Bowman said, in a release. “Now is the time to usher in the decade of the Green New Deal and ensure environmental justice for all.”
