Honoring fallen soldiers

Posted

It was a day to remember.

The North Riverdale Baseball League and local veterans came together on Sid Augarten Field on May 25 to play ball and take a moment to honor those who served their country and lost their lives in the line of duty.

Under the warm light of a bright spring sun, the day’s proceedings opened with a skills competition to test the mettle of young ballers. Through a relay race, throwing challenge and a hitting competition, the baseball players put it all on the line to the delight of friends and family.

After the skills gauntlet ended, everyone gathered for the memorial portion of the league’s fourth annual “Salute to Our Armed Services” event. Veterans with American Legion posts 1525 and 1122 entered the field flanked by two lines of saluting ball players. Veteran James Rynne spoke of the significance of Memorial Day, and how crucial it is to remember those who served and gave their lives for the country.

Then, two veterans and two military personnel currently serving threw the opening pitches to raucous applause.

What followed was the good old American tradition of a Memorial Day weekend barbecue.
