How did this happen?

To the editor:

The only thing that will put a dent into mass murders is the banning of assault weapons.

AK-47, AR-15 and the like are weapons of war. They have no place on the streets of America. Their only purpose is to kill people. When the framers of the Constitution spoke of a well-regulated militia, they could not have imagined these weapons of war on our streets, capable of murdering children in schools and people in nightclubs, in department stores, in malls, etc.

This was not the intent of the Second Amendment! You do not need an AK-47 to kill a deer.

If the Congress continues to do nothing about this, there will be more mass murders, especially with the prevaricator in the White House targeting Mexicans, Muslims, and all people of color. His message is they do not belong here, and the white nationalists will take their cue from him as the killer of 22 people in El Paso did.

We cannot go on like this. We will lose our democracy, and we will wake up one day wondering, “How did this happen?”
