JFK English teacher Rita Karig, 84

Rita Karig — beloved mother to Stephen, grandmother to Dylan, sister to David, aunt to Justine, and sincere friend to many — passed away peacefully at 84 on March 16, 2021.

She lived a long, healthy and abundant life, and dedicated much of her time and energy to supporting those most in need in her community, as well as toward philanthropic efforts throughout the Bronx.

She served as an English teacher at John F. Kennedy High School for more than 35 years, where her passion and love of education flourished. Her attitude toward life — from participating in yoga well into her 80s, to her love of literature she shared with many — will continue to inspire for years to come.

Friends remember her as a light on the soul, even during moments of darkness. “Rita always had a way of making others feel special, appreciated and loved.”

Hers was a perfect example of a life well lived — an example of what it means to love, to hope, and to be true to oneself.

The memories she leaves behind with family and friends will provide strength and courage for the days that follow.

She will be laid to rest at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley.
