More jobs for NYC, but unemployment grows

Posted

New York City added 94,000 private sector jobs in June compared to the year before, its 2.4 percent increase is among the best in the state.

Ithaca, Kingston and Syracuse all had better job creation increases in that year period, but those markets combined to create just under 10,000 jobs.

Unemployment in the city is on the rise, however, from 4.1 percent last year to 4.3 percent this past June.

NYCHA expands property management summertime hours

The New York City Housing Authority has extended summertime property management office hours, keeping its offices open between 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., on Wednesdays.

This allows those public housing residents who typically work during business hours to get help with rent payment issues, completing annual income re-certifications, and scheduling maintenance appointments.

The extended Wednesday hours will continue through Aug. 28.

NYCHA — which locally manages Fort Independence Houses on Bailey Avenue and Marble Hill Houses on Broadway — has implemented a number of new programs in light of negative press about the speed improvements have been made to properties.

Those programs include Saturday maintenance blitz at selects properties and alternative work schedules for more than 2,700 NYCHA employees.
