Keep express buses rolling

Thanks for your thoughtful editorial about cars and carbon emissions.

One way Riverdalians can be encouraged to leave their cars in their parking spots is by providing good public transportation. The plans by the city’s transportation department to curtail off-peak express buses to Manhattan is a step in the wrong direction. Riding the bus over the years on weekends and at night, I was never alone. In fact, I was frequently joined at this time of year by holiday shoppers, theater-goers and people with odd-hour jobs.

Riverdale sits at the top of a ridge. The subway is too far away, especially for seniors, to be reached on foot, and connecting buses are few and far between, especially at off-peak hours. If you have a disability or something heavy to carry, forget bout those subway stairs. Only one local station offers an elevator.

Metro-North’s two local stops are both in locations that are not walkable. So the express buses are the best option for keeping the car off the street.

By the time this is published, the community will have held a “town hall” to let our elected representatives know how vital this service is. Let’s hope they can get through to DOT to rescind yet another of their ill-conceived plans.
