Loeser's street renaming delayed

Posted

A planned celebration this weekend that would have officially renamed the corner of West 231st Street and Godwin Terrace “Loeser’s Deli Place” has been postponed again.

This time, according to the Loeser family, nearby construction is the cause.

The ceremonial street renaming passed unanimously last year after being introduced by Councilman Andrew Cohen. It’s set to help celebrate the 60th year of Loeser’s Deli, which remains open at 214 W. 231st St.

“I’ve truly lived the American dream and am incredibly grateful to all of my longtime customers,” founder and owner Fredy Loeser said in a release.

DePinho joins Press as summer intern

Summer is here, and not only does that mean longer days and plenty of sunshine, but it also officially starts intern season at The Riverdale Press.

Joining the newspaper’s intern team right away is Gabriella DePinho, a rising junior at Manhattan College who is majoring in English and communications, with a concentration in journalism.

She was born in the Bronx but raised in Rockland County, just a short trip across the old Tappan Zee Bridge.

At Manhattan College, DePinho is the news editor of The Quadrangle student newspaper, and also is an editor for Manhattan Magazine, the campus literary publication.

Girl Scouts win coveted Gold Award

The Boy Scouts of America have the Eagle Award, but the Girl Scouts have an honor just as prestigious — the Gold Award.

It’s won by just 5 percent of Scouts in the country, but two local Scouts earned the coveted award last week at Baruch College — Faith Mulosmanaj and Marieteresa Porcher Allen.

Both are juniors at Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy, and have been in Scouting for a combined 18 years.
