March 2, 2016 crime round-up

A car was stolen, another was broken into, and yet another got a fresh coat of graffiti within a single day of the past week—a week that saw a spate of car-related crimes throughout.  

1. In one of the crimes on Feb. 21, a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe was stolen from in front of its owner’s home at 3825 Orloff Ave., according to police. 

The victim, 29, told police she parked the car at around 1 a.m. on Feb. 21, but when she woke up the next day, it was gone. 

Police say there were cameras on scene, but a canvass of the area produced no results. 

This case is closed to detectives. 

2. Just a few hours later, an unknown perpetrator broke into a car at 2530 Independence Ave. and stole a variety of documents including credit cards, a driver’s license and other personal documents, police said. 

The victim, 54, said she parked her car at 9 a.m., but when she returned, her front driver’s side window was broken and her items were gone. 

This case is open to investigation. 

3. A Lexmark van was vandalized while parked on the street some time between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., also on Feb. 21, according to police. 

Police said the van was parked on the corner of Reservoir and University avenues, when an unknown perpetrator sprayed graffiti all over it, the 44-year-old operator of the company vehicle told police. 

Police said there was no discernible tag, or wording, on the van, but that the case is closed to detectives.

4. A 2010 Nissan Versa was stolen on Feb. 24 from in front of 5550 Netherland Ave., according to police. 

They said the 30-year-old victim left it parked there for a full 24 hours. When he returned, it was gone.

The car did not appear as having been towed, and there was no broken glass in the area.  The victim told police he had the only set of keys. 

This case is closed to detectives.
