LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Maybe he should've stayed in jail

To the editor:

Bigotry has always been a combination of evil and stupidity, as well as an excuse for criminals to target victims.

The latest examples have been in the news daily, as thugs have been targeting Asians.

They would have us believe the Chinese government’s poor initial response to the coronavirus is the fault of every Asian on the planet. Since every government has done wrong, there’s an excuse to hate everybody.

Is Donald Trump’s neglect at handling the virus after it came to our country a reason to hate all German-Americans?

There have been cases of Blacks assaulting Asians. So some people from one group that should know better about the evils of bigotry practices it instead.

The April 1 Daily News features an article, “Stomp susp killed his ma.” It turns out the Black man who assaulted a 65-year-old Filipino woman while yelling at her what many bigots have yelled at Blacks, “You don’t belong here,” 38-year-old Brandon Elliot had stabbed his mother to death. He was sentenced only to 15 years to life.

This story does not say how many years he served, only that he was released early. This raises a question: Why was he released at all? Why is it that so few people are sentenced to life without parole, regardless of how horrific their crime is?
