Michael Safian was a decorated veteran

Michael Safian, who grew up in Riverdale and went on to become a decorated veteran, died on March 3. He was 68.

Mr. Safian graduated from St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Penn. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. 

He moved to California after the war and lived there for more than 30 years before settling in Anthem, Ariz.  

“Michael had a giving heart and always tried to help those in need,” his family said. He loved movies, basketball, watching football and music. 

Mr. Safian is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, of Phoenix; son Christian Safian and his wife Kristin of Fresno, Calif.; sister Cindy Safian of Stamford, Conn.; brother Lance Safian of Riverdale; and step-father and step-mother Egon Safian and Rose Ellen of Riverdale. 

A private family service was held in Anthem, Ariz. A military funeral service was held on March 15 at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

The family asks that donations in Mr. Safian’s name be made to a veterans’ organization.
