Police looking for man who shot bystander in the back

Posted

Police are trying to figure out who shot at a man early Sunday morning not far from the Jerome Park Library.

A 23-year-old was standing in front of an apartment building and business strip at 131 W. Kingsbridge Road around 4 a.m., when an unidentified male started firing shots at him, striking him in the back.

The man was taken  to St. Barnabas Hospital, and was reported in stable condition, according to officers from the 50th Precinct.

Police didn't share a specific description of the man they said pulled the trigger, but provided street surveillance video, which can be found here.

Anyone with information in regard to the identity of the man wanted for questioning can call the New York Police Department's Crime Stoppers Hotline at (800) 577-8477. Tips also can be submitted by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at NYPDCrimeStoppers.com, or on Twitter @NYPDTips.

All calls, police say, are strictly confidential.

The 50th Precinct has had only one other shooting incident this year that involved two victims, according to statistics provided by the NYPD. That's compared to two incidents by late July last year that involved three people.

Crime is up slightly this year by 1 percent, but is down more than 11 percent compared to 2017.
