Pompeo just can't be believed

To the editor:

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared May 3 on ABC’s “This Week” that there is “enormous evidence” that a laboratory in Wuhan, China, is the source of the coronavirus that has led to the pandemic creating havoc worldwide.

His assertion contradicts the current findings of the American intelligence community, which has concluded there is no evidence of the lab’s guilt, and little likelihood that its guilt can ever be proven, whereas there is evidence that transmission of the virus to humans came from non-human species outside the lab.

Mr. Pompeo also asserted back in January that “enormous evidence” that American military personnel in the Middle East were in imminent danger of terrorist attacks planned by the Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, leading the United States to assassinate him. We later learned that there was no such evidence whatsoever.

Why should we believe anything Mr. Pompeo says about the origins of the virus — or anything else?
