Remembering Stonewall Inn

This is in response to a letter to the editor from Avrum Hyman, responding to your June 20 story about a photographic history of gay and lesbian writers.

It seems that he thought it was not a worthwhile story to print because it doesn’t relate to Riverdale. I beg to differ. That story did relate to Riverdale. There are many LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) people and their families who live in Riverdale. They may be your neighbors, employers, employees, children, grandchildren, teachers, aunts, uncles and so on.

I am sure that they and many other readers enjoyed this information because they found it relevant to their lives.

Mr. Avrum, June 28 was the anniversary of the day, 50 years ago, the gay rights movement started. After years of bullying, arrests and brutality by police at the Stonewall Inn in the Village, the LGBT community at the Stonewall fought back and stood up for their right to exist, to be who they were.

The fight back against the police on that day 50 years ago started the fight for equality that continues into today, a fight which remains especially important since LGBT rights are under attack by this administration.

I think that it is always positive to read about struggles for equal justice that were successful, even if those struggles don’t impact personally — although I believe that no one is free unless all people are free.

I thought it was an interesting story, and timely for all the “happy pride” celebrants and their families.

It’s not often that information on this subject reaches the public, and I thank The Riverdale Press for printing the story.
