Posted

The family of psychoanalyst Robert Butter is sorry to announce his passing in the early hours of Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, following a heart attack and a surgical stent procedure. He was 83.

He grew up in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, and was a Riverdale resident for the last 14 years, loving his home at 2400 Johnson Ave.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree in psychology at City College, and his master’s in social work at Hunter College. He received his psychoanalysis certificate at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health in New York City.

In addition to his private practices in New York City and Westchester County, he taught and supervised in several psychoanalytic programs, including the National Institute of the Psychotherapies License Qualifying Program.

He touched many with his warmth, knowledge, sweetness and personal gentleness.

He was married to Sandra Ruiz Butter, who died in 2013. Surviving him are his daughter, Alicia Ruiz — a lawyer — as well as his loving partner, Ellen Goldberg, a trustee of The Clement Meadmore Foundation.

An outdoor memorial will be held Saturday, Oct. 17 at 11 a.m., at Woodlawn Cemetery, 4199 Webster Ave., in the Bronx.

His colleagues, family and friends all miss him dearly.
