Sounds like a bag tax

(re: “As of March 1, new rules for shoppers are in the bag,” Feb. 6)

Here are some thoughts on the upcoming plastic bag ban.

Now the ban on plastic bags is understandable. Since they are not biodegradable, they will last forever in landfills. But I use plastic bags that don’t have holes in them for garbage. I also use them for items I give to friends.

As for the bags that do have holes, they go in the garbage. So when it comes to bags that wind up in trees, how do they get there? Are people carelessly leaving these bags in the street? Do they toss them into streams?

I have no problem going back to paper bags, which were the norm in my childhood. That’s not a problem, except on rainy days. But why the 5-cent charge for them? These bags are both biodegradable and recyclable.

So this charge sounds suspiciously like a tax.
