Support ELLIS

(re: “ELLIS alum still degree-driven despite tragic loss,” March 14)

It was poignant to see ELLIS Preparatory Academy highlighted in The Riverdale Press’ otherwise sad and touching story by Simone Johnson.

Although the ELLIS program — English Language Learners & International Support — was founded more than 10 years ago at the John F. Kennedy high school campus, I have come to know it only recently through a volunteer tutoring program established this year at Christ Church’s Jones Center.

As your story notes, ELLIS aims to give recent immigrants an education where they would get “full English support and the full high school experience.”

It’s a wonderful aim, and we are lucky to have such an institution in our community.
