Teacher and lawyer Minna Jane Edelman, 92

Minna Jane Edelman, 92, passed away on May 17, 2019, of natural causes.

Beloved mother and mentor to her children Meredith Forgosh (Les) and Michael Edelman (of New York City), and beloved granddaughter Samantha Forgosh (of North Oaks, Minnesota). Beloved daughter of Morris and Sadye Moscovitz, and younger sister of Walter Moscovitz.

Born in and lifelong resident of the Bronx, and active teacher and lawyer in Westchester and New York City. Graduated Hunter College in 1947. Received a master’s in education from Columbia University (Teachers College). Graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1956, where she met her former husband of 46 years, Samuel (1929-2018).

Focused on family law where she was a true counselor for her clients. Also was a professor and teacher for New York City public schools and at Brooklyn College.

Very active civically, serving inter alia as the first woman president of the Yonkers Lawyers Association, and a member of the board of trustees for what was then known as the Hebrew Home for the Aged in Riverdale and Riverdale Mental Health Association.

Devoted Yankee fan from birth, religiously going to games for more than 85 years. Manager of teams of her children in the North Riverdale Little League. A scholar, mentor and advisor who was always approachable and made everyone feel at ease with her humor, wit and pragmatism. She was known for her strong leadership and breaking through glass ceilings in the legal profession with intelligence, charisma and kindness.

She is dearly missed by her family and friends.

Memorial donations in Minna Jane Edelman’s name preferred to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
