The more advocacy, the better

Your readers should know that the Dec. 12 headline story and editorial (re: “Check politics at the door,” Dec. 12) was prompted by a resolution ending in, “therefore be it resolved that the aging committee of Bronx Community Board 8 urges the MTA to consider the needs of seniors and people with mobility issues when determining the number and schedule of express buses serving the communities of Bronx Community Board 8.”

The resolution passed at the aging committee with five members voting in favor, and one abstention. At November’s full board meeting, the resolution passed by 27 in favor, one opposed, and two abstentions.

I am a member and a former chair of the aging committee. The committee’s resolution serves to enhance the voice of our district’s older adults who fear that the proposed express bus cuts to off-peak service will increase the very real peril of aging in isolation.

The needs of one segment of the community can get buried in lengthy resolutions that respond to an important district-wide issue. This separate resolution will surely complement any resolution that traffic and transportation brings to the board, and may draw additional advocacy to help achieve our common goal.
