(re: “Vannie nature lovers mourn Putnam Trail paving,” Aug. 15)
As mentioned in the story, paving the Putnam Trail will bring the trail into compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. However, asphalt is not a requirement.
Other surfaces comply and are beneficial to this valued wetland corridor. Absence of maintenance has cause a need for improvement, but not an overhauling, which puts a few at an advantage while causing discomfort to, marginalizing and/or removing, other stakeholders.
State law defines those in wheelchairs as pedestrians. The more the trail is geared to, not solely but mindfully, pedestrian traffic, the better it is served by all users.
Foremost in design should be concern for biodiversity and environmental factors. Let’s aim for this. Please!
