A truly perfect game

To the editor:

It was the Friday after Thanksgiving. I woke up in dread. How am I going to entertain my two kids today, boys both 10 and 13? I have no plans.

The images of “perfect families” kept racing through my mind — those that had it all lined up with plans in place for the long holiday weekend, while I was winging it.

Then a miracle happened at about 10 a.m. Coach Paul Witte, head coach of the Riverdale Green Vipers U-11 travel soccer team, sent out a life-saving email inviting families to take advantage of a beautiful day and come play soccer at Seton Park. The replies were growing in number.

At Seton Park, the sun was bright as could be, and the dogs were running free. Upon arrival, the kids spontaneously formed their own football game while the parents gathered around, catching up on conversation and Thanksgiving traditions.

Very shortly after, kids and parents alike — including many neighborhood parent coaches — joined on the soccer field for a two-hour recreational soccer game of parents versus kids. There must have been 10 families joining in, and the crowd kept growing.

Fun was had by everyone. It was 100 percent organic — sunshine, crisp fresh air, exercise, no electronics, and a very strong Riverdale family community.

Talk about being thankful. Amen.
