UFT caucus takes aim at Carranza

The United Federation of Teachers filed for injunctive relief against city schools chancellor Richard Carranza on Sept. 4, following the delay in reopening physical public school campuses.

Five members of the union’s Solidarity caucus asked for the injunction claiming the city’s criteria for teachers to file for and receive medical accommodations were “arbitrary.” They argued even if teachers themselves aren’t vulnerable to the coronavirus, they could unwittingly pass it on to someone who is.

Other union members who should qualify for remote teaching accommodations are those who live with family members vulnerable to the virus, according to a release.

“The 3,600 UFT members who support us must know now that this is another example of a pattern of leadership that doesn’t make the grade,” said Lydia Howrilka, one of the caucus leaders, in a release.
