LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

We leave a little something behind

Posted

To the editor:

This morning, a red sky is in the east. My art class is painting flamingoes. My husband is birding on Jones Beach.

Why not try to be hopeful? “My” candidate won, and you-know-who will be out, at some point, leaving flotsam and jetsam behind. We all leave something behind.

But once again, I am frightened. I was getting a little better — not careless, just braver. But now the winter of my life is here again, and I am amongst those who have lost friends to the virus, and plan to hunker down. More family Zooms and phone calls.

Every day, this virus ravages, and the deniers and idiots wage their own freedom of choice wars. They are hurting us — you and me.

Other than say, “Put on your mask,” write some letters. Talk to like-minded compadres. What can I do?

When the vaccine comes and when it’s my turn, I am going to think of how to more constructively help.

I am so disappointed in my country. At 77, I never expected to say that the way I am now saying it. But I know that “saying” is not action.

So expect to hear from me to rally you.

You like reading my pieces in the paper? I hope, then, you will think, too, of what we can all do together.
