Cuomo caps Klein endorsements

“I think they’re both very talented public servants,” the senator said of the governor and the mayor, who has also endorsed him. “They want to accomplish what’s best… and anywhere that I can help on that, if I agree with what they’re proposing, that’s what I’ll do.”

The group of Latina women who organized to support Mr. Klein singled out his work on universal preschool, $300,000 in funding for a Latina suicide prevention program and other undertakings.

Ms. Diaz gave a personal take on her support of Mr. Klein, saying he showed Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. the ropes when Mr. Diaz was an assemblyman.

“He taught Ruben that you always fight for your fair share for the people of the Bronx,” Ms. Diaz said.

She also praised Mr. Klein for working with state Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. — the borough president’s father, who is known for taking controversial stands — saying, “we all know that is not an easy task.”

Meanwhile, this week saw Mr. Koppell receive one of his first mainstream endorsements, from Manhattan’s Amsterdam News. Mr. Koppell also issued a statement criticizing the governor’s endorsement of Mr. Klein, but ongoing waves of support for the incumbent are threatening to drown out the underdog candidate’s voice.

Cohen, Engel called ‘Nazis’

Councilman Andrew Cohen made a startling comment in passing during a pro-Israel rally that drew about 200 Riverdalians on Sunday.

“I’ve been a city council member for just a little over six months, and one of the things I didn’t know I had signed up for was being called a Nazi,” he said.

During a Monday phone call, Mr. Cohen explained that he and Rep. Eliot Engel were subjected to the slur after a previous pro-Israel rally on the steps on City Hall.

Mr. Cohen said as he and Mr. Engel walked down Broadway on July 14, people attending a pro-Palestinian rally began to call the lawmakers “Nazis.”

“They were screaming at both of us,” the councilman recounted. “It was very ugly.”

Mr. Cohen said he ignored the protesters, but Mr. Engel did respond.
