DOE reveals Clinton’s two new high schools

Education officials have selected two new schools to share the building that has been home to DeWitt Clinton for more than 80 years.

Bronx Collaborative High School and World View High School, both brand new, will enroll 108 freshmen each this fall. As the Department of Education gradually shrinks Clinton’s student body by 40 percent over four years, the two new high schools will add one grade each year until their rosters list 420 to 460 students apiece.

Bronx Collaborative High School is described as a humanities program with interdisciplinary offerings in the DOE’s Directory of New Schools and New Programs. The school aims to incorporate city resources and history into lessons and foster collaborations with community leaders and professionals. Technology and social media will be integrated into all subjects, according to the school’s website.

Brett Schneider, former assistant principal at Institute for Collaborative Education in Manhattan, will serve as its principal, according to District 10 Community Education Council President Marvin Shelton.

The school’s foundation program for freshmen and sophomores includes courses on city issues, visits with local and national government officials, a community service component, journalistic and memoir writing classes and social media training.

Its track for juniors and seniors involves college visits and seminars, college level courses, internships, business and entrepreneurship training and graduation thesis projects.

In addition to passing state tests, graduates of Bronx Collaborative High School will be required to complete graduation projects in each subject area. They must present and defend their work before a panel of evaluators, according to the school’s website.

The school aims to offer extracurricular activities, including debate, poetry jam, online newspaper, chess, literary magazine, robotics, yearbook, glee chorus, a gay-straight alliance and an outdoors club.

The directory doesn’t specify whether advanced placement courses will be offered.
