Fort Independence Park renovations delayed — again

The park’s jogging path, dog run and storm drainage systems are all being overhauled under the renovation project. Currently, locals can access the grassy hill, playground, bathrooms and newly refashioned benches along the jogging trail. The path along Goulden Avenue is largely complete and parks officials anticipate opening it in August, according to Abramson. Remaining work includes the basketball court area, fitness area, dog runs, paths and landscaping.

David Hill, a biker and runner, visits the park twice a week. Mr. Hill, 28, said that coming to the park frequently has allowed him to observe the developments that are being made despite the inconsistent completion dates.

“I could see if they weren’t doing anything, but the work is in progress,” he said.
When the construction began, some residents felt left out of the process because meetings for the renovations took place years before.

“We just wanted a better sense of what it’s going to look like,” said Ms. Hart.
Dog owners are also still reeling over the loss of the dog run. Philip Spivack, 66, a longtime park goer, would frequent the park everyday with his dog when the run was accessible. Since it’s fenced off, he walks his dog around the neighborhood instead.
“He’s the one that suffers,” he said pointing to his 5-year-old Siberian Husky Callahan. “That was a tremendous dog run. He’d run and play with his pals.”

For Altagracia Pozo, a childcare provider, the construction of the park has caused some other nuisances. She takes a small group of toddlers to the site every morning when the weather permits and said that for weeks, the women’s bathroom did not have any water so the children were unable to wash their hands there when they were done playing. The construction and demolition at the park also made it difficult for the kids — one as young as 5 months old — to play in peace, she said.

“They were making a lot of noise and the kids were afraid,” said Pozo, 38. “There was a lot of dust.”
