Jobs program aims to link businesses and Bronxites

As an example, the Bronx Chamber of Commerce’s Chief of Staff Michelle Delgow Cristofaro said a person who wants a driving job could use H.I.R.E. services to develop a resume and then acquire a commercial driver’s license.

Mr. Klein said the idea for the program was born over dinner with colleagues including former Riverdale Councilwoman June Eisland, who currently works as a development consultant and lobbyist.

She said H.I.R.E. would be more effective than job fairs with “people lining up, tossing a resume and praying.”

“We’re very specific about training, about getting people qualified,” Ms. Eisland said. “There are certain licenses that don’t take a lot of time to get. They’re not terribly expensive. That’s the kind of thing we’re going to be specific about and supply.”

Campaign blitz

H.I.R.E. is also part of a streak of initiatives Mr. Klein has brought to his district as he seeks reelection. From allocating $180,000 in funding for an African slave burial ground in Drake Park to $250,000 for raising awareness about endometriosis, a tissue disorder that affects some women, the senator has barely let up from launching large projects throughout this year.

Mr. Klein has previously come under criticism for allegedly holding up passage of the Women’s Equality Act, which includes measures from closing the wage gap between men and women to strengthening abortion rights. But he maintained this year’s emphasis on women’s health with $50,000 in funding for a women’s health week last month and $100,000 in funds for a women’s wellness program at Riverdale Senior Services (RSS).

Mr. Klein announced funds for the latter project during a visit to RSS, located on Netherland Avenue, on Monday.

Last year, he allocated the same amount to RSS so it could launch its women’s wellness program by renovating a computer lab, setting up a discussion room and hiring a social worker to talk about eight areas of health, from physical well-being to community involvement.
