Still, he said he was proud of his showing in Riverdale in light of the support Mr. Klein received from Gov. Andrew Cuomo — who campaigned with Mr. Klein at Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy the Sunday before the vote — Mayor Bill de Blasio and nearly every other elected official in the Bronx.
While the race divided the Ben Franklin Club, which had long supported Mr. Koppell, and the rest of Riverdale, Mr. Feld said he expects both the grassroots group and the neighborhood to recover.
“The club in 2008 was divided among the stronger Hillary [Clinton] supporters and the [Barack] Obama supporters, and we got together immediately after that,” he recalled.
However, the Klein-Koppell race might have more ramifications to come for the northwest Bronx’s political scene. Rumors have begun to circulate that Ben Franklin Club members disenchanted with the group’s recent moves might start a new, rival organization.
Asked about the possibility of starting a new club, Mr. Koppell said, “We’re looking into it,” but declined to go into detail. He did not state his own plans for the future, either.
For now, the former councilman is taking credit for Mr. Klein’s move to create a coalition between his breakaway group of Democrats and the mainstream Democratic Conference. Under pressure from the mayor and others, Mr. Klein announced he would end the coalition between his Independent Democratic Conference and Senate Republicans after the November general ballot.
“In some ways, we won, because Senator Klein said he’s going to vote with the Democrats now,” Mr. Koppell said. “If it happens, that’s certainly a good thing.”
