Local vet’s suicide shocks neighbors

Veterinarian Dr. Shirley Koshi worked at Johnson Avenue and West 236th Street.

Correction appended.

A dispute over ownership of a cat resulted in tragedy last month, when local veterinarian Dr. Shirley Koshi committed suicide following months of legal proceedings and alleged cyberbullying as well as a November protest outside of her practice at Johnson Avenue and West 236th Street.

Dr. Koshi’s former lawyer confirmed a Feb. 26 report saying authorities found the veterinarian dead due to an apparent suicide at her Upper East Side home on Feb. 16. Dr. Koshi was 55.

The attorney, John Sarcone, said the suicide was likely caused by a high number of cruel online comments and concomitant interference with her business.

“I do know that was certainly weighing heavily on Dr. Koshi, who was a caring, decent, kind individual who cared about her practice and about animals,” he said.

The events began when colleagues of cat rescuer Gwen Jurmark took a cat from an outdoor colony maintained by Ms. Jurmark to Dr. Koshi for treatment on Aug. 9, 2013. After Dr. Koshi refused to give the cat to Ms. Jurmark, saying the animal was a stray, Ms. Jurmark organized a small protest outside Dr. Koshi’s establishment on Nov. 9.

As news spread of the standoff — which included a lawsuit by Ms. Jurmark seeking to gain the cat from Dr. Koshi — online attacks against the veterinarian mounted and, according to Mr. Sarcone, business at her establishment plummeted.

“I don’t know whether they wanted to drive her out of business, but it was mean-spirited bullying and it was absolutely outrageous conduct on their behalf,” the lawyer said of Dr. Koshi’s antagonists.

Mr. Sarcone added that the city’s district attorney should investigate Dr. Koshi’s suicide and said the veterinarian’s estate should seek justice. But he said he himself is no longer Dr. Koshi’s lawyer and that he has not been employed to take further steps.

Since news of Dr. Koshi’s suicide became public, with the American Veterinary Medical Association issuing its condolences, Ms. Jurmark said she has become the target of online bullying herself.

Compliments to reporter Shant Shahrigian on an excellent article. I read an early report on Dr Koshi's death in the NY Daily News; this one is superior in every way.

Good to see that Dr. Koshi's suicide, and the events that very likely led up to it is still being covered in the media. The "alleged" cyber-bullying certainly looked real enough. The Facebook page that sponsored the bullying has since been scrubbed clean. However, there were supposedly a number of screenshots taken before those comments were removed and you might start by getting your hands on those. Reading the posts and announcements should put to rest any doubts as to whether Dr. Koshi was being cyber-bullied or not. Of course, only Dr. Koshi could comment on the damage the campaign had on her mental state and business, but unfortunately, she's not in a position to do so.

This is really shocking. This particular group of animal lovers who spearheaded the campaign against the vet needs to love people a little more as well.

It was not Ms. Jurmark who rescued Dr. Koshi’s own two cats from the ACC but the veterinary community. Nor did she find new homes for Dr. Koshi's cats who are now with members of the veterinary community.

Nor did Ms. Jurmark retrieve or find a home for the cat found at Dr. Koshi’s establishment. This was done by another rescuer.

Please report this story correctly. Your reporting was one sided and full of holes.

@carolcat16 There was no mention of what happened to Dr. Koshi's own cats after her suicide in the story above. Not sure which story you're talking about being "full of holes", but this one was about the cyber-bullying Koshi had to endure. From what I've read elsewhere, Jurmank put a hold on the two cats found in Koshi' residence, but they were eventually released to rescuers unassociated with Jurmack. Same was true of the orange tabby found in Koshi's office.

hi inde88, in the original story as it was reported it stated that Ms. Jurmark "had / placed" the cats that belonged to Dr. Koshi.

As you can see above the original story was "correction appended" and the cats are safe.

@carolcat16 Thanks for the clarification. The amendment came somewhere between my original post and yours, so wasn't sure which story you were referring to.

I fail to see why anyone is surprised by this. These demented TNR cat-advocates have been using these cyber-bullying tactics for decades. They even issue death-threats to well known Congressmen, their families, and their friends. (Google for: Oda Lawmakers Shun Security Threats) They have tried to get whole corporations shut-down by using these tactics because the business owners wanted a few of their TNR'ed cats relocated off their properties due to health-code violations, insurance policies, and abandoned animal violations. Just read the archives of groups like "Friends of Animals", "Alley Cat Allies", "Vox Felina", and "Care2"; to name but a few. There you'll find THOUSANDS of examples of how they orchestrate and launch their cyber-bullying TNR campaigns against anyone or any business or any local government that does not believe and do as they do. (If they haven't deleted all their evidence due to this recent turn of events. It's all fun & games until someone dies, isn't it. I have been doing my best to archive all their cyber-bullying attacks for the last 3 years, but this has been going on for decades now.)

You don't want rabid stray cats in your yard? Don't tell anyone on the internet! You'll find your photo, name, addresses (home and business), phone-numbers (home and business) and everything that they can find out about you plastered all over their cyber-bullying web-sites. Even any 800 numbers of your local politicians, law-enforcement agencies, and anyone else that they can find so they can call those numbers relentlessly to start a DoS (Denial of Service) attack on those businesses and government agencies. Online petitions are just peanuts compared to all the other underhanded tactics that these TNR groups use.

Where do you think these most recent fools learned to do this? They were just doing what all TNR groups have been doing for decades. This is precisely how they manipulated everyone into getting these highly illegal, invasive-species TNR programs into every community where they exist in the very first place. This is also why they don't see that they've done anything wrong. They've been doing it for so long it's become the normal mode of behavior and perfectly acceptable mindset for these cyber-bullying TNR cretins.

For just 2 examples of THOUSANDS.

Google for: Loews Hotels Feral Cats

Google for: Cats Venice Complex Reprieve

The second entails a $150 million renovation project for low-income housing put on hold; jobs lost, money lost, homeless still homeless, court costs and lawyers; just to save a few of their feral cats. And the saddest part of all, the vast majority of these TNR'ed cats had already died heinous inhuman deaths from TNR-practitioners' "death by attrition" re-abandonment philosophy. (Road-kill, diseases, parasites, injuries, environmental poisons, cat & animal attacks, exposure, etc., etc. Their all-encompassing, feel-good, blinders-on, euthanasia of "death by attrition".)

Similar scenarios can be found by Googling for feral cats and churches, universities, hospitals, shopping centers, malls, apartment complexes, etc., etc. TNR-advocates delusionally believe that any land on which a cat has stepped-foot is their own property and they can manipulate and control the owners and all laws on it.

They continue to cyber-bully everyone because it's been working for them, and you ALL let them get away with it. Check out Alley-Cat-All-Lies' and Care2's pages just this week, they're doing the exact same thing to even more individuals and communities. They just don't care. Their invasive species vermin cats are far far more important to them than ANY human lives. If one of their rabid cats bites your child, they yell out loud, "IT'S YOUR CHILD'S FAULT!" and then issue another cyber-bullying attack to prevent ANY cats from being destroyed in that area. They don't even care that their cats' Toxoplasma gondii parasites are now killing off whole races of humans (genocide by cat), like it is doing to the Inuit people, from their cats' parasites now being found in dying seals, whales, and hundreds of others of marine-mammals around the world. What also I fail to also understand is why aren't these people locked-up for life yet? Or at least given state-issued mandatory mental-health treatment and observation for a long long long long time.

I have no positive words to say about this situation other than I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Koshi in early Feb. of this year to treat a sick cat. I had no idea this "bullying" had been going on by Jermark as I would have put a stop to this and the disgusting Gwen by putting her in her place. AS a former rescuer (but feral cat colony manager) I know how pathetic and vile she is. I found most cat people to be crazy - this is why I left this industry. Facts: Gwen is broke and cannot afford VET care. She has over 50 cats living in her home (in the basement) that she can barely afford to feed not alone Vet care. These cats never see sunlight or get to look at the birds. She should be reported for animal cruelty and / or the health dept. She never took the certification TNR workshop. I laughed at her reference of her colony being registered: when did she do it (when she was up against the wall in this dispute as she used to mock the Neighborhood Cats.org and the director. She never had enough money to feed those feral cats and have stuck people over the year to pay her VET bills. Why didn't she pay Dr. Koshi for treating Karl ? She would have left Karl sick to die in the woods. I would be delighted if a caring Vet adopted one of my ferals for a better life. She does earn money - her "puppet" husband gives her an allowance for a limited amount of low end cat food. She could not maintain the outdoor colony (no sheds, not enough food, so people had to steo up and feed). She is a laughing stock and her day will come. She clearly crossed the line this time as she is a vile and ignorant woman.
