Someplace Special gets nod for its many charitable deeds

Someplace Special, the hair salon and toy store for kids, on West 238th Street, has raised more than $800 and donated a variety of toys to the International Organization for Migration, an organization that rescues children from slavery in Ghana.

“When I first found out about these children, I felt I had to do something to help,” explained Suzanne Axelbank, Someplace Special’s owner. “So in 2007 we turned our fifth anniversary into a fund raiser and took in $500. But then I thought that these kids, who had been through so much, needed some fun in their lives.” Ms. Axelbank started sending toys, Tootsie Pops and other treats she sells in her store along with other donations she collected through charity events, in-store donations and by selling Lance Armstrong-style rubber bracelets. The name of one of the boys Ms. Axelbank is sponsoring, “Welcome,” is written on the bracelet.

In recognition of her efforts and an essay Ms. Axelbank wrote describing her work and future ideas, Oriental Trading Company has named Ms. Axelbank and Someplace Special a finalist in its Make the World More Fun contest. The Oriental Trading Company will donate $5,000 worth of Oriental Trading goods to the international organization if it selects Someplace Special.

An Internet vote will determine the contest’s winner. Votes can be cast at www.maketheworldmorefun. com, now through Aug. 4.

“I have received some incredible, heartfelt letters from the children in Ghana who feel blessed that someone has tried to care for them from so far away,” said Ms. Axelbank. “If we can win this contest, it will be further confirmation that every child deserves a full and rewarding life.”
