Police have arrested two men in connection with the death of Hwang Yang, who was shot and killed on West 232nd Street near Cambridge Avenue on April 19.

Alejandro Campos, 21, and Dominick Davis, 20, were arrested last night for the young chef's murder. Police said Mr. Davis admitted killing Mr. Yang, a 26-year-old Riverdalian, and Mr. Campos admitted to driving the white Honda Odyssey getaway car.

Mr. Campos was cuffed first, at around 7:30 p.m., at 2850 Webb Ave., where the two suspects live in separate apartments. Mr. Davis was brought in several hours later, according to police.

They were charged with murder, robbery, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property. Mr. Davis has seven prior arrests on charges including robbery and possession of marijuana. Mr. Campos was arrested once previously, for reckless endangerment.

Mr. Yang, who lived with his family at 3261 Johnson Ave., was walking home at around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday morning last week, when police said Mr. Campos and Mr. Davis targeted him for his iPhone. They said a struggle ensued between Riverdale and Cambridge avenues and Mr. Yang was shot once in the chest.

Capt. Kevin Burke, commander of the 50th Precinct, said the suspects regularly mugged people for their iPhones.

“We have a written and a video confession. They were out driving around; their intent was to rob someone for an iPhone. That’s what they do; they put it on craigslist and sell it,” Capt. Burke said.

He said the suspects followed Mr. Yang as he walked home from the West 231st Street No. 1 train station.

“They saw him walking on 231 and heading into the park, so they decided to cut him off at Cambridge. The driver waited in the vehicle and Davis got out, takes out the gun and demands property,” Capt. Burke said.

Police said Mr. Davis claimed that he fired the gun accidentally.

The incident marked the 50th Precinct’s first alleged homicide this year and Riverdale’s first since May 2008.
