CARTER BURDEN GALLERY ANNOUNCES NEW EXHIBITIONS BY RE-EMERGING OLDER ARTISTS

Two new exhibitions featuring the unique artwork of re-emerging older artists will be on display January 11th through February 1st at the Carter Burden Gallery, located at 548 West 28th Street #534 in Manhattan. The Carter Burden Gallery showcases the vibrant, cutting-edge and transformative art that is the product of the unique cultural wealth possessed by older professional artists.

In the East Gallery, John Beardman and Hilda O'Connell present Beyond Reason. O’Connell illuminates her research and interests in language and alphabets with large mixed media works on canvas. Using the palimpsest technique, a form of overwriting, she creates a field of linguistic fragments and calligraphic notations which represent a wordless language. Beardman’s paintings on canvas present large abstracted representations of the human head. His work is a personal expression of remembered visual phenomena, personified abstraction creating a scene of familiarity and revulsion simultaneously.

In the West Gallery, Beth Barry and Mel Smothers present Playful Scapes. In her second exhibition at Carter Burden Gallery, Barry’s bright acrylic paintings focus on light, color, and movement, and are strongly influenced by the Massachusetts coastline. Pleasure is a large part of her process and a critical part of the finished piece. Smothers’ energetic, colorful, abstracted landscapes with oil on canvas are from his series “Mountain Lake,” referencing the Hopi shaman Mountain Lake, who influenced psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung. Smothers’ paintings combine rich color, painterly brushstrokes, and a combination of opaque and translucent layers to create a striking and dynamic surface.
