Man left bloodied on Riverdale Avenue in North Riverdale after being hit by moped

Posted

A man was hit by a moped at West 259th Street and Riverdale Avenue on Wednesday, June 7, in what several eyewitnesses have described as a hit and run. DCPI stated the 41-year-old man was crossing the street when a moped hit him.

Joey, an employee of Addeo’s Riverdale Pizzeria, described the immediate aftermath of the incident that occurred just outside of the pizzeria. He heard “something hit something,” comparing the noise to the sound of a fender bender.

When he walked outside he saw the man bleeding from his head on the street. He described the man as awake and with his eyes open. People walked out onto the street and stopped traffic, according to Joey. Luckily, he said, the ambulance was just up the block and came right away alongside fire trucks.

A video sent to The Riverdale Press shows the man in a suit on the ground with a trail of blood beside him as FDNY EMTs assist him. One of the EMTs could be heard instructing the man to lay his legs flat.

They put him on a stretcher and carried him off, according to the eyewitness.

According to the New York fire department, the man was taken to St Barnabas Hospital.

Although not sure of the specifics of the incident, Joey said, bikes and Citibikes have been causing havoc with the bike lanes recently.

A woman at Sunshine Nails Riverdale shared a similar sentiment to The Press, saying, “You don’t see them coming. I said I’m going to get killed someday trying to get out of my car.”

A woman who works on Riverdale Avenue who did not wish to be named, heard from customers the man was hit by someone on a motorcycle without a plate number and left the scene.

There were conflicting reports from eyewitnesses regarding what time the incident might have occurred as well. Two Addeo’s employees said it happened around when school got out and one Key Foods employee said it was about 5:40 p.m.

The time leans to being much later with the call to FDNY being made at 7:22 p.m.
