Robbers grab $1,000 from Kingsbridge bank

Posted

Sometimes, just claiming to pack heat is enough to pull off a bank robbery.

A man police described as about 6 feet tall and in his 20s, wearing a black jacket and black hat, reportedly walked into the Chase Bank at 5581 Broadway in Kingsbridge late Thursday afternoon, passing a note to a teller saying he had a gun.

The guy never brandished a weapon, police said, but the teller wasn't taking any chances, forking over about $1,000 cash.

Police from the 50th Precinct canvassed the area looking for the man, but came up empty.

Given the heist unfolded in a bank, cops will most likely have security camera footage to help them track down the suspect, police said.

Along with officers from the 50th Precinct, the New York Police Department's major case unit — which handles jewelry store and bank robberies, as well as art theft from museums — responded.

But this isn't the first time thieves targeted Bronx banks in recent years.

A woman in her late 20s or early 30s knocked off at least four northwest Bronx banks on two different days back in May 2016, according to published reports. She allegedly first struck at the Chase at 5656 Riverdale Ave., demanding money from a teller and making off with an unknown amount of cash.

Days later, she reportedly hit three institutions — the Chase Bank at 3775 Riverdale Ave., and at 5581 Broadway, and the Capitol One Bank at 185 W. 231st St., also in Kingsbridge. At two of the banks, the woman reportedly demanded money, but was forced to leave empty-handed.

Then in August 2015, a man wearing a navy blue hat, striped button-down shirt and blue jeans strolled into the Chase at 5581 Broadway on a Monday afternoon, using the same tactic as last Thursday’s alleged perp, slipping a note to the teller claiming he had a gun while never actually displaying one.

He ran off with nearly $2,000, although it's not clear if these robberies are related.
