Woman struck by car on Major Deegan

A pedestrian was struck by a car and killed as she was walking against traffic along the Major Deegan Expressway at around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, police said.

Victoria Hamann, 28, was unconscious and visibly injured when emergency crews arrived, police said.  She was transported to New York Presbyterian Allen Pavilion on W. 220th Street and Broadway, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.

No information was immediately available about why Hamann, who lived in the south Bronx, was walking in the right lane of the expressway, police said.

The 30-year-old driver of the 2008 Honda Accord that struck her stayed on the scene of the accident that occurred just north of W. Kingsbridge Road.

The driver, who awaited the arrival of police officers from the 50th precinct, told police that he drove onto the Major Deegan Expressway from the W. 230th Street on-ramp when he saw Hamann walking towards him.

In an attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved to the right but lost control and swerved again to the left and struck her, the driver told police.

No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

The incident marks the first deadly collision of 2017 in the 50th precinct. Last year, a 77-year-old woman died after being hit by a car on Broadway at an intersection where the city had installed, but failed to switch on, traffic lights.
