PS 24
PS 24’s fifth graders got a send off that included speeches by elected officials and their surrogates, including someone from State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office and an aide from Rep. Eliot Engel’s office. City Councilman Oliver Koppell was the only one who spoke at the ceremony, held at the David A. Stein Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy, MS/HS 141 auditorium. He briefly mentioned the controversy over the school’s recently removed principal, Philip Scharper. He quickly moved on, choosing instead to focus on the reacquisition of the classroom annex at the Whitehall luxury co-op, which he helped engineer. Acting-Principal Deirdre Burke also went out of her way to stress the positive, saying the news from PS 24 was all good news.
The children came down to the front of the stage and sang four songs, including “That’s What Friends Are For,” at one point waving their arms in the air, and even taking a few shuffling side to side steps.
